When I used to eat meat, I loved smoked mackerel. There was a fishmonger in the town near our Oma’s village who would sell freshly smoked fish, still warm from the smoker. Buttery soft mackerel and Schillerlocken (dogfish) were my favourites, just eaten plain or on pieces of bread or crackers. I don’t eat fish any more, but the rest of my family still enjoys smoked fish and we most often get them from the Eastern European grocery stores like Starsky and Yummy Market.
This smoked mackerel pate is easy to whip up ahead of time and store in the fridge, in an airtight container, until serving time. Use cold smoked mackerel for the pate; the texture is much tougher than hot smoked mackerel, but it holds up nicely when blended with the cream cheese. I think that if hot smoked mackerel was used, the pate would turn into a mousse-like puree instead of remaining slightly chunky.
Serve the smoked mackerel pate on crackers (we used Triscuits) or small pieces of pumpernickel or French bread. Add a sprig of parsley or dill for garnish.
