In April 2013, I moved into my own apartment. Through luck and the help of family, I was able to get this small apartment in a house over 100 years old, renovated.
First, take a peek at the before kitchen.
The Kitchen
And here is the finished product! Since the apartment is a rental, the landlord wanted low cost but durable finishes. So low-cost pre-made cabinets, laminate counterop, and laminate floors.
We installed a white and blue tiled backsplash, at only $ 2.99 per square foot.
I also got a double sink. The cabinets were all new from Ikea.
I wanted open shelves above the sink, to make the kitchen feel more open and airy. I got these brackets from Lee Valley Tools, which are gorgeous and amazing.
A new wood-look laminate countertop was installed, and an extra leaf was put into the pass-through at counter-height, to act as extra counterspace and a buffet (you’ll see once I show off the living room). I rearranged the kitchen a bit, moving the fridge to the other side of the kitchen to face the sink, and added a full-length cabinet for extra storage.
I bought this green Marimekko fabric on sale in Helsinki, and sewed these curtains myself.
I added unique ceramic doorknobs that I had been collecting for months beforehand (I got most in Germany).
And here is my print from The Wheat Field from Etsy!

Great job! I love the bright colour touches you added! This is very inspirational and shows that you can make a real difference on a tight budget! Good luck with the rest of the house,,,,,,,I’m waiting to see the living room completed!
