Recently the residents of Toronto Island generously opened their homes for us lucky visitors to tour, in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, organized by Grannies in Spirit.
The first summer cottages were built in 1872 and today there are around 650 residents who live on the Island year round. There are no cars, but there are plenty of bicycles and boats. For the tour, the grannies had set up little stations in different historic locations and gave a short lecture on important aspects of the island’s exciting past. These stories were really well presented with tons of juicy details, allowing us to have a quick rest while learning about the Islanders’ struggles to keep their homes.
Taking a peek inside each house was such an adventure. Each one had its own style and represented another era of houses built on the island. Most of them were simply the cutest little cottages ever.
Above are some of the domestic details. Many had a more classic style, but a few home owners updated their interiors with flair. Notice the bright green bookcase! The claw foot tub!
A few of the island gardens. Most were magnificent and some displayed thee typical local whimsy.
