I have a small apartment with a few windows, but it sometimes gets stuffy (especially if I’m not there all day). I created this low cost and simple deodorizer that you can use to freshen a room (or a mattress after a long winter).

What You Need

1 small glass jar

1/2 cup baking soda

10 drops essential oils (I used lavender)

hammer

nail

Directions

1. Mix the baking soda with the essential oil in a small glass jar.

2. With a nail and a hammer, punch out several holes in the top of the jar lid. You can do random holes, or a shape (like a star or a heart). If you use a mason jar with a two-piece lid, set the ring on a workspace covered with a towel (to protect it from dents), place the centre disc on top of the ring, and tap the nail with the hammer. Be sure not to hit too hard, or you might damage your work surface.

3. Screw the lid back on the jar and leave in the room you want freshened. The baking soda absorbs odour, and the essential oils add a light fragrance. If you need a little extra freshening now and then, give the jar a little shake to loosen the powder again.

4. You can also use the jar and sprinkle the baking soda over a mattress or couch, leave for about 30 minutes, and then vacuum off.
