Tomiko and I discovered Purl Soho through their blog The Purl Bee. Then we discovered they had a shop in New York City. In Soho. So when we visited our aunt over the long weekend, we naturally trekked down to Soho to take a look!
The shop stocked beautiful Liberty fabrics, thick and colourful felt, gorgeous silky-soft yarns, as well as kits and notions and odds and ends.
Purl first opened in 2002, followed by a fabric shop in 2006. The two stores combined in 2010 in Soho, and is now a beautiful space.
We think that Purl Soho made knitting chic. There are so many ugly examples of knit or crocheted hats and scarves in weird yarn in weird colours that just look like cat barf. The items at Purl Soho (and you can see them on their blog) look minimalist, graphic, yet fashionable, and are made in fantastic artistic yarns. The visit entirely inspired me.
If I lived in NYC, I would definitely hang out here and take up knitting!
