Our aunt took us to Ippudo for dinner on a Sunday evening in New York. Ippudo is a Japanese restaurant with locations in the East Village and the West Side. We do a lot of our own Japanese cooking, so I wasn’t too enthusiastic about it (although obviously our aunt never disappoints with her restaurant choices). I was absolutely blown away! We visited the West Side location, which was beautifully laid out and decorated, and the food was sublime. The food had an amazing combination of flavours.
Although all the dishes we sampled were excellent, the Hirata Buns were my absolute favourites! They were the typical Chinese steamed buns, but in this case, filled like a sandwich with various toppings, including pork, chicken or eggplant and eringi mushroom, served with Ippudo’s original spicy sauce and mayo. They were absolutely unbelievable! We devoured them before we could even take a picture… I need to figure out how to make them myself.
This is the grilled tofu with various toppings, served with a spoonful of wasabi noodles.
Ryan had the Torishio ramen, topped with a shiso leaf.
I had the Akamaru Modern with a boiled egg on top. The menu describes it as bold, modern translation of the original pork broth, consisting of thin noodles topped with Ippudo’s secret “Umami Dama” miso paste, pork chashu, cabbage, sesame kikurage mushrooms, scallions, and fragrant garlic oil. Umami indeed!
Sculptural bowls, and chopstick rests that were just black river stones.
The Hitokuchi Tarts were filled with custard and topped with fresh berries.
The Hirata Milk dessert was a bowl of matcha ice cream, mochi, red beans and almond-coconut milk. Our family never turns down matcha-flavoured anything!
