When we were kids and still living in Canada, our mom would take us to pick-your-own farms. I loved gorging on fresh berries still warm from the sun. Then during summers in Germany, we would pick cherries from our uncle’s tree, wild boysenberries in the hedgerows, and wild yellow plums in the fields. On a warm, sunny July day, Ryan and I drove out to Whittamore’s Farm in Markham. Unlike other pick-your-own (PYO) farms, Whittamore’s has a broad selection of produce. We got adorable new potatoes, fresh sugar snap peas, velvety soft raspberries, and luscious perfumed strawberries. With all this amazing produce, I made a raspberry shrub, strawberry yogurt Bundt cake, and strawberry vodka, in addition to just eating the berries fresh.
Beautiful new potatoes, fresh from the earth.
Whittamore’s Farm has a farm store as well, where you can buy ready-picked fruit and vegetables from other Ontario farms, frozen pies and sausages, jams, jellies, preserves and barbecue sauces. A trip to Whittamore’s isn’t complete without tasting one of their butter tarts!
