In July I read How a Second Grader Beats Wall Street by Allan S. Roth. It was easy to read but a lot of the information was basic investing stuff. Great for beginners (or second-graders), but I feel I’ve passed that point. I would still recommend it to friends that want to learn about investing. Along with several other experts, Roth recommends investing in low-cost index funds, and investing for the long haul. Instead of dancing in and out of the stock market, you get the market’s average return, which over the long run, ends up beating actively managed funds.
Now in August, I’m planning to read After the Crash: How to Guard Your Money in These Turbulent Times by Garth Turner. Turner, a former MP for Halton Region in Ontario, writes the daily blog Greater Fool. The book is quite dated, from 2009, and obviously talks about the financial crisis in 2008/2009. I’ll see how much turned out to be correct, and if there are any other tips that might be applicable now.
