A picture every hour, on Saturday 2 August 2014. It was a the Civic Holiday long weekend in Canada, so we visited our family at the Curve Lake First Nation Indian Reserve. We had a leisurely morning, then stopped at the farmers’ market at the Evergreen Brickworks before we truly hit the road.
7:00 am: My kitty Miso just woke up.
8:00 am: My daily cup of tea.
9:00 am: Ryan and I share some berries.
10:00 am: The nasturtiums on my balcony.
11:00 am: Tomiko, Donatello and I pull in to the Evergreen Brickworks.
12:00 pm: We have lunch at the farmers’ market at the Evergreen Brickworks. Tomiko and Donatello share paella, chorizo and an empanada. I get a grilled cheese sandwich with caramelized onions.
1:00 pm: Driving to Curve Lake, Ontario, which is about a 2-hour drive northeast of Toronto.
2:00 pm: We meet our cousin and our cousin’s kids at the community pool, and then we all drive back to the house.
3:00 pm: Leaves of three, let it be – poison ivy in Curve Lake.
4:00 pm: It was a beautiful hot day, so of course there are fishermen on the lake, our dad included.
5:00 pm: Karlos, our mom, and her friend visiting from Germany also make the trip up. And someone brought donuts!
6:00 pm: Chow mein is ready! This is a traditional Japanese-Canadian dish that we make at all our family reunions and other parties. We make it with chicken, but the clerk at Sanko (the only Japanese food store in Toronto) says he makes it with squid and shrimp. Yummy!
7:00 pm: the evening sun over Buckhorn Lake.
8:00 pm: Bear sighting at the garbage dump!
9:00 pm: As it gets darker, more bears come for dinner!
10:00 pm: Moonrise over Buckhorn Lake.
11:00 pm: While the mosquitoes were eating us, we were toasting marshmallows for s’mores over the campfire.
