On a brisk fall day, Tomiko, our mom and I tried out Mom’s Korean Food, a no-frills restaurant in the Koreatown neighbourhood of Toronto.
Korean food is famously spicy, and any dolsot (stone pot) dish is also extremely hot, and seems to get hotter the longer it sits! This all makes for a cozy, warming, but delicious meal when the weather outside is cold and icky. Not only does the temperature heat of the food warm you up, the ensuing heartburn from the spice will keep you warm inside for hours afterward!
I ate bibimbap, a bowl of fresh white rice topped with various pickled vegetables, tofu, and a fried egg. Once we enter winter, I will start ordering dolsot bibimbap, where the sizzling hot bowl will make the rice crispy on the bottom, and basically keep your food at boiling temperatures. Tomiko ate a kind of cold japchae (noodles) that was still spicy. Our mom ordered a kind of pork soup that had a deliciously-flavoured broth but which was not the least bit spicy!
As per usual, our meal was served with an assortment of cold Korean pickles, including kimchi, bean sprouts, and mysterious greens.
