This scarf is perfect for anyone that cannot wear wool. The fibres are so glossy and soft that there is no chance of any wool-related itch. I wanted to make a gift for our mother, who is both sensitive to wool’s scratchiness and is always too warm. Basically, she is never cold and I needed to find a scarf she could comfortably wear all winter.
I chose the smoothest yarn I could find, a plum and wine bamboo silk from the basement sale section at Romni Wools. Unfortunately, Ella Rae’s Bamboo Silk was discontinued, but there are plenty of other bamboo silk mixtures out there. This one is 70% bamboo and 30% silk, which gave it both strength and a delicate satin finish.
The pattern is called Looks Good on All Sides Scarf by Wendy Bernard. This scarf has a subtle repeating diamond motif that really does look good on all sides. I repeated the pattern with the plum yarn, then continued in wine, plum, and wine again.
I really recommend this or any of Wendy’s knitting books. Her patterns are beautiful and her style is fun and modern.
Here’s what I used:
