Han Ba Tang, meaning “one full round,” is a new Korean restaurant in the North York area of Toronto. Ryan and I made the trek up there to celebrate my birthday. Having already had some drinks downtown, we skipped the alcohol and went straight for the food.
The menu featured small tapas- or izakaya-style items with a Korean fusion twist, kind of like Barrio Coreano in South Koreatown. Ryan ordered the sticky pork tacos which were served in soft corn tortillas with shredded cabbage, red onion, and kimchi mayonnaise. I had the vegetarian asparagus taco, served the same way. Then we split a ‘small’ order of kimchi fries with bulgogi and topped with green onions. The kimchi was funky and pickly, but not too spicy and didn’t make the crispy fries too soggy. Then I also had mushrooms stuffed with even more kimchi and topped with cheese. There was a side table full of glass jars in which soju was being steeped with various fruits and vegetables, but we passed on those this time.
We arrived soon after the place opened, so we were able to find a table before it got too busy. The decor was kind of rustic and industrial, with weathered wood, metal chairs, and exposed brick walls. It kind of felt like we were in a post-apocalyptic fishing boat!
