It is pretty much impossible to go to Soma Chocolatemaker and leave without buying something tasty! Whether it’s a handcrafted chocolate truffle, impossibly rich chocolate cake or thick hot chocolate that is basically melted chocolate, there is something to tempt everyone. One of the many benefits of visiting a Soma boutique is that the chocolatemakers are in the back behind a glass wall, and you can see what they are working on. When Ryan and I were at the King Street location a few weeks ago, the chocolatemakers had these 20cm logs of chocolate dripping in melted chocolate. We had to go closer to inspect, and we realized they were making chocolate salami! One worker was dunking the chocolate-fruit logs in melted chocolate, the next was coating them in powdered sugar, and the last was packaging them in mesh casing. Amazing!
The truffles are shiny little confections with interesting but delicious flavours, ranging from standard almond or caramel to more exotic flavours like Douglas Fir or Balsamic Vinegar. I’ve tried a couple, and each is amazing. The wall of chocolate bars are also great, and one of their distinctive chocolates is the Old School, which is a rustic-looking log that has just two ingredients: partially ground cocoa nibs and whole crystals of organic cane sugar. One of my favourites is the Cocoa Latte, which is high cocoa milk chocolate that is like the fantastic lovechild of a milk chocolate bar and a dark chocolate bar.
I ended up with a pair of bars, a small toasted white chocolate bar that tastes like marshmallows and a dark chocolate peppered with crunchy cacao nibs. So long, Soma!
