I love noodles. I am a noodle girl. Hence ramen. Specifically, Kinton Ramen. I walked by often as it was undergoing construction and was intrigued by the gorgeous wood siding storefront, and I finally found time to eat lunch there with some friends.
To start, I had the delectable Tofu Furai, a mixture of tofu and some chopped carrots and greens formed into nuggets and deep fried. Japanese deep fried food is surprisingly light and crispy, not greasy and stodgy. They were served with some lettuce, cabbage, and a delicious tangy sauce.
For the soups, you have your choice of pork or chicken broth, the flavour of the broth (from shoyu, shio, miso or spicy garlic), how thick you want the broth, how thick you want the noodles, the type of meat topping, and any additional toppings. There are myriad combinations to try out.
I had the chicken broth shoyu soup with thin noodles. There wasn’t much else included other than a garnish of nori and chopped green onions, but the broth was amazing. Silky smooth and thick, rich and and full of chicken flavour. The noodles seemed house-made with a great toothsome texture.
My friend ordered a starter of fried pork gyoza, or Japanese dumplings, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He had the same soup as me, but with meltingly soft pork belly on top.
Another friend enjoyed the spicy garlic pork broth with thick noodles and garnished with bean sprouts. It was spicy and she took the leftovers home for second lunch.
The soups were very filling, and only one of us could finish our whole bowl. If you have a good appetite and are able to drink the last drop of broth, the servers will take your picture and give you a frequent-customer card as a true Kinton Bowler. If you are able to finish 10 bowls, you win 10 free gyoza. If you finish 100 bowls, you win a free topping to your ramen for life. And if you are a really hungry customer, you win a $1000 gift card. Not that you need any encouragement to go back for more.
