This year, Now Magazine‘s Best of Toronto list named Insomnia as the best brunch place in the city. As a brunch-loving city, this award is quite the honour. Our friends from other cities (like Vancouver or Saint John’s) were amazed at how popular brunch is in Toronto – but wholeheartedly embraced the meal.
To celebrate my recent academic success, Donatello and I went out for our first ever brunch together. We also had to find out what makes Toronto’s best brunch.
I love a good exposed brick interior. The solid wooden tables and large glass windows made an attractive setting for our meal.
For the first few minutes after opening, the tables surrounding us were empty. By the time we ordered, the restaurant was packed. The other brunchers turned out to be weekly regulars and the servers had all of their orders memorized. This was promising.
Donatello had a luscious and chocolaty mochaccino.
Above is the St. Alban’s classic benedict and Donatello’s first taste of peameal, or Canadian, bacon.
Our food arrived quickly and soon afterwards we figured out how Insomnia created the city’s best brunch. It was the potatoes! Called Home Fries in Legendary Sauce, they are are unbelievably delicious! Crispy fried potatoes covered in a ketchup-y barbecue gravy. I could eat a whole plate of them!
The couple at the next table didn’t eat all of their home fries and we had to stop ourselves from asking for their leftovers! They were so good that I would definitely return just for another bite of these perfect potatoes.
Above is the huevos rancheros. I’ll order anything with avocado and I wasn’t disappointed. A soft tortilla slathered with refried beans and two expertly poached eggs served beside a pile of the incredible home fries. You must try these!
