DIY: Shiraz Crocheted Adult Turban and Free Pattern

Here is an easy pattern for a crocheted turban for an adult, crocheted in the round using a magic ring. The hat has some ribbing in it to give a bit of stretch and some visual interest. I also lined it with Thinsulate fleece so it will be cozy and warm for those cold Canadian winters (it’s currently -22C with the windchill right now).

I found it very difficult to find a free pattern for a crocheted turban meant for adults. There were plentiful patterns for newborns and babies, but none that would fit an adult and that met our main criterion: don’t look like cat barf.

For this hat, I chose a soft Debbie Bliss merino yarn in a plummy shade of wine, which nicely complements my lacy green crocheted scarf and black winter coat. The hat is snug and warm and I plan on wearing it until winter is over!

Shiraz Crocheted Adult Turban and Free Pattern

Supplies

2 skeins yarn (I used Debbie Bliss Rialto Aran 100% merino), 80m 50g per skein, in merlot

5.0 mm crochet hook

3×10 cm piece of dark red leather

Thinsulate fleece, roughly 75 cm x 25 cm

Dark red thread

Directions

Make a magic ring. Ch 1, then sc 11 in the ring.

Row 2) Ch 3, dc 1, slip stitch to join (11 dc)

Row 3) Ch 3, *2 dc in each dc* around; slip stitch to join (22 dc)

Row 4) Ch 3, *2 dc, 1 dc* around; slip stitch to join (33 dc)

Row 5) Ch 3, *2 dc, 1 dc* around; slip stitch to join (44 dc)

Row 6) Ch 3, *2 dc, 1 dc, 1 dc* around, ending with a 1 dc; slip stitch to join (55 dc)

Row 7) Ch 3, dc in each stitch around; slip stitch to join (72 dc)

Row 8) Ch 2, hdc in every dc around in back loop only (this  creates ribbing) join with a slip st in top of beginning ch. Turn.

Rows 9-13) Repeat row 8 five times.

Row 14) Ch 2, then *2 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 hdc 1 hdc, 1 hdc*. Slip. Turn. (85 hdc)

Row 15) Repeat row 8, 13 more times

Finish off and weave in ends.

Thread yarn needle and using a double thickness, weave yarn from top of first rib to the edge of the hat and pull tight. Secure yarn and weave in ends. Thread the piece of leather through the top of the gathered part of the hat, and sew the leather together tightly to create the ‘knot’ of the turban.

To line the turban, fold the hat into quarters. Lay on top of the Thinsulate fleece and trace the outline.

Cut out four pieces of fleece, two for the front and two for the back. Make sure you arrange the pattern so that the Thinsulate stretches along the width of the pattern, so that it can stretch to fit your head. The front lining pieces will have to be mirror images of each other and will have a notch cut out of the bottom corner to allow for the gathered front knot. With right sides together, sew the front lining pieces together along one seam. With right sides together, sew the back lining pieces together.

Sew two halves of the lining together, to make the complete lining for the hat. Turn inside out and sew to the inside of the turban, with the soft fleece side facing outwards and the black side facing the inside of the crocheted hat. Make sure no lining pokes out.
