I might have mentioned before that Ryan loves poutine. For the second year, Toronto restaurants have been hosting Poutine Week where several restaurants create a special poutine dish and compete for the title of Best Poutine.
Poutine Week happened back in February, but Ryan and I made sure to try some poutine one wintry afternoon. Poutine is a Quebecois dish that became available in the rest of Canada only over the past few years. It’s a bowl of French fries sprinkled with fresh cheese curds and doused in gravy. The hot gravy melts the squeeky cheese into a gooey mess, and the whole thing is delicious. Typical of Canadian lumberjack food! Restaurants will put their own spin on poutine by varying the type of French fry, gravy, cheese, or additional toppings.
We went to the Fancy Franks location on Bloor Street where Ryan had the Not So Fancy Poutine which was regular poutine topped with chopped hot dog, bacon, ground chorizo sausage, pepperoni, and scallions. Not So Fancy, indeed!
I had the Grilled Cheese Poutine which was poutine topped with a grilled cheese sandwich and sliced tomatoes. It was hearty and profoundly filling. I couldn’t finish the whole thing.
We finished our lunches off with a half-dozen mini donuts topped with nutella and crushed biscotti. We were too full to try one of the hot dogs or even the shakes. The rather long list of poutines is dwarfed by the 18 types of hot dogs. Luckily for me, any Frank dog dish can be customized with a veggie dog. Next time, though!
