Tomiko and I first saw FoldIT Creations by Gavin Canning at the Annex Flea a few months ago and thought we had to share our discovery!
Gavin Canning’s jewelry pieces are not only beautiful, but mind-blowing in their intricacy. The origami leaves, koi, dragonflies, hearts, and ‘paper’ airplane are gorgeous, but they don’t compare to the detailed cranes. How does he fold silver into cranes? I just don’t understand!
We are half Japanese Canadian and we have had an assortment of origami paper in our house since as far back as I can remember – different shapes, different sizes, gold leaf, the works. Our dad taught us how to make paper cranes, and we’ve taught others at school and made dozens to help friends with art projects. So we consider ourselves quite proficient in the art of crane-folding. However, I can’t imagine making these tiny tiny cranes out of paper, let alone silver.
These sterling silver studs are small (1.8 cm across) and seemingly low key, but are breathtaking upon further inspection. Origami crane earrings are also available in an assortment of origami paper colours and designs, old maps, or upcycled book paper.
The origami leaves are recycled from old computer circuits and then silver bonded together.
The sterling silver origami koi is accented with a diamond-faceted garnet.
These origami leaves are available in different colours and patterns, so there is sure to be something for everyone.
