I guess this isn’t really a ‘before’ photo, because the rooms have already been cleared of furniture. Our parents are renovating the top floor of their house, which hasn’t been done (other than painting) for the last 25 years. The top floor used to be a one-bedroom apartment where our parents, Tomiko, and I lived before our brother was born, back in the 1980s. Then about 25 years ago they renovated it into a bathroom, their bedroom, our brother’s bedroom, Tomiko’s and my shared bedroom, and a ‘middle room’ which had shelving and a computer desk. Now that we three kids have moved out, our parents are going to transform the top floor into their bedroom suite.
This is the view from the back of the ‘middle room.’ To the extreme left is the entrance to what used to be our parents’ room and is now the office, then the bathroom door, the staircase, behind the wall was Tomiko’s bedroom but will now be the walk-in closet, and to the right was Karlos’ old bedroom.
Here we are standing below the skylight, looking to the back of the ‘middle room’ and the wall between the ‘middle room’ and Karlos’ old bedroom. Oh, and don’t mind the rice cooker on the floor.
This is the view from the ‘middle room’ looking into Karlos’ old room. When we moved back from Saudi Arabia in 2004, we got to choose the colours of our bedroom walls. Karlos chose blue, I chose apple-green, and Tomiko chose hot pink. I think our parents want to paint it all white, though, making it easier on the eyes than our previous ‘clown house.’ That wall with the blocked window is going to be torn down to make one big, bright bedroom, and the whole floor will be redone in bamboo.
