Even though there is a Momofuku Milk Bar in Toronto, I’ve never actually been. So while I was in New York two weeks ago, I thought, let’s try it!
I had the signature cereal milk soft serve ice cream, and paid an extra $0.75 for the cornflake crunch topping, which I fully recommend. The soft serve did indeed taste like cereal milk, the milk leftover from a bowl of cornflake cereal. The cereal flakes added a bit of salty crunch to the otherwise smooth soft serve. A bottom layer of toothsome cereal topping gave an extra hit of texture just when you had finished the top layer.
I also ordered a slice of the crack pie, to go. It seems like it’s a very common thing to take out, since the piece was already sliced, wrapped in parchment and individually packaged in its own little cardboard envelope. The pie itself was good and I liked the crunchy oatmeal crust, but I don’t think it warrants a comparison to crack. It was kind of a variation of the Ontarian butter tart.
I had no idea that the milk bar offered bao, or Chinese steamed buns! The menu above shows the option of braised pork shoulder served with cucumber and scallions, or the vegetarian option with shiitake mushrooms and caramelized onions served with Kewpie mayonnaise, pickled carrots, and peashoots. Each are available topped with an egg for an extra dollar.
