Donatello and I have oatmeal for breakfast on weekdays. We try to at least start our days off healthy. The basic recipe is easy – just instant oats and hot water. Since mornings are always a rush to get out the door, I try to do as much preparation the night before. I also like to keep the pantry well stocked with yummy toppings, though sometimes I need help on those extra busy mornings.
The difficult part is staying inspired every morning, day after day. Sometimes, I’m just bored of everything. That’s why I’ve come up with some favourites that I turn to when I’m having one of those mornings. I’ve provided the standard recipe below, as well as three of my favourite variations: fruit and nuts, apple cinnamon, and chocolate banana (for those extra tough mornings).
- ½ cup instant oatmeal
- 1 cup boiling water
- a splash of milk
- various toppings, as listed below
- The night before, portion oatmeal in a bowl and fill the kettle.
- In the morning, turn the kettle on as soon as you wake up. Start getting ready while the water boils.
- Pour hot water over oatmeal, add the milk, and mix gently.
- Arrange toppings below artfully on oatmeal.
Topping 1: Fruit and nuts
-3 figs, cut in half
-1 tbsp sunflower seeds
-2 cinnamon sticks
Topping 2: Apple cinnamon
-half Gala apple, chopped in bite-sized chunks
-1 Tbsp walnut pieces
-a sprinkle of cinnamon
Topping 3: Chocolate banana
-half banana, thinly sliced
-1 Tbsp chocolate chips
What are your favourite toppings?
A few more breakfast ideas:
My favorite way to eat oatmeal is with brown sugar and milk. The bananas and chocolate as a topping look delicious too.
I’m a sucker for cinnamon and apples! Yum! I ate oatmeal for breakfast for awhile, that is actually a good idea. I can give the yogurt a break but keep the fruit with the oatmeal.
The fig one looks delish! I love fruit and nuts in my oatmeal. Thanks for linking up to the Bloggers Brags Pinterest Party. I have pinned your post to the Bloggers Brags Broad.
