These waffles are rich and buttery, with a hint of cinnamon. Ever since I made this recipe for the first time, no other waffle measures up. Growing up, I don’t remember eating homemade waffles very often. Our Oma would make delicious dessert waffles that were more like cookies than a breakfast food, so I liked making waffles ‘like in the movies.’ We’ve got an old waffle iron that is probably 20 years old, but works like a charm; follow the instructions on your own waffle iron when baking these.
I like to eat these waffles on the weekend; try some of these flavour combinations:
- a bit of butter and maple syrup
- nutella with bananas and walnuts
- butter and cinnamon sugar
- yogurt and berries
- homemade strawberry jam
As a tasty savoury variation, omit the cinnamon sugar and use bacon fat in place of butter, then serve the waffles with poached eggs or fried chicken.
