Saudi champagne was served as a special beverage at restaurants or home parties where we grew up. Saudi Arabia is a country where alcohol is haram, or forbidden. As kids, of course, we didn’t care about the lack of alcohol; we just thought Saudi champagne was a great treat at ma’asalama (goodbye) parties or when we occasionally went out to restaurants. Our parents, however, were amused at the fact that so many Westerners missed real champagne and this virgin, halal, kid-friendly alternative existed in the first place.
A tall glass of this fruity, slightly minty sparkling apple juice brings back memories of being a carefree kid in the blistering heat of the Saudi desert.
