The Barn Quilt Trail in Prince Edward County, Kiku Corner

During the six hour journey between Toronto and Montreal, Meinhilde and I made a detour through Prince Edward County. This wine region in Southeastern Ontario has recently exploded as a foodie destination, so we were excited to explore it for ourselves.

Apart from the other treats of the area (stay tuned, we will show those to you shortly), we were delighted to discover that we were on a Barn Quilt Trail. Traditionally, a barn quilt is a board painted with a single quilt square and mounted onto the side of a barn. Artists can design a pattern that has special meaning, perhaps depicting family heritage or the line of business of the related farm. When members of a community join together and each displays a quilt square, a barn quilt trail is born. This is rural artwork at its best – elegant, unique, and enhancing the beauty of its surroundings.

Meinhilde had read about barn quilts in the US, but we had no idea barn quilts were in Canada. It became a bit of a game for us to find the next barn quilt and gave us an amusing drive through the lovely Prince Edward County. Some were as simple as tri-color geometric patterns, while others were more elaborate and designed to represent real-life objects. My favourite wasn’t a square at all, but rather a grey-tone pattern covering the entire roof of a building (see last picture below). If you’re interested in visiting, our route took us through Wellington, Bloomfield, and Picton, which featured many more barn quilts than those displayed here on Kiku Corner. Our only regret of the day was that we couldn’t spend more time in Prince Edward County.
