Montmorency Falls

On our Quebec Culinary Adventure, Tomiko and I stopped at Montmorency Falls on our way to the Île d’Orléans. Montmorency Falls are 30 metres higher than Niagara Falls, and located just 13 kilometres from Old Quebec.

Access to the falls is free, but the parking is not. We paid just over $10 to park by the Manoir Montmorency, which is just a short stroll to the falls. Tomiko and I just walked around the falls and the surrounding area, and skipped the activities like the cable car, zipline, and via ferrat.

Here is our view from the top of the falls, looking across the St Lawrence River to the Île d’Orléans.

Montmorency Falls

The Manoir Montmorency, a historic building overlooking the St Lawrence River and the Île d’Orléans, houses meeting rooms, reception halls, and two restaurants. It was a lovely English-style manor house with a gorgeous garden out front.

There were a couple fishermen in hip waders casting in the waters at the bottom of the falls. Our dad would have loved this!

We crossed the suspended bridge that spanned the falls and gave us a great view of the river. If the bridge is too boring for your taste, you can also do the via ferrata, which includes a 120-metre zipline. A via ferrata (meaning ‘iron road’ in Italian) is a mountain-climbing pathway where climbers use a cable to complete the route, sometimes with the help of steps carved into the rock, or in this case, metal rungs that protrude from the rock. This is great for novice mountain-climbers who don’t have a lot of equipment, while still offering stunning views and the exhilarating feeling of clinging to a cliff face.

Several flights of stairs descended to the bottom of the falls and to the St Lawrence River. It seemed like the locals ran up and down the stairs for workouts; we even saw a family with quite a pregnant woman stairclimbing with her partner who had their infant on his back. It was a hot day and we were planning on visiting the Île d’Orléans afterwards, so we skipped the stairs.

We noticed this chubby groundhog when another park visitor was taking photographs of it. Tomiko and I were slowly walking past us, and it didn’t even seem to notice us. Then I took out my camera and took a photo, and then it looked directly at us. It seemed to be posing for its photographers!
