Boulangerie Meunerie la Rémy is a bakery and flour mill that Tomiko and I visited along La Route des Saveurs de Charlevoix in the valley of the Gouffre. The bakery uses flour that is made from wheat grown in the Charlevoix area and milled on-site, and the bakery offers a variety of freshly baked goods. The site includes the bakery near the parking lot, the old mill by the river, the barn, the granary, the cellar, and outdoor bake oven near picnic tables where you can sit and enjoy a picnic of freshly baked pastries.
Inside the bakery store, we saw freshly baked loaves of bread cooling on wooden racks.
The bread is baked in an 18th-century brick and clay wood-burning oven located by the store counter. It seemed like the floor of the bakery was covered in a dusting of flour from when the bakers plied their trade. The bakery had myriad baked goods for sale, including over ten types and various shapes of bread; brioches; pastries like croissants and amandines; and even fully made pizzas! Sacks of wheat flour milled on site were also for sale – I regret not buying this local flour!
Of course we had to purchase something from the Boulangerie Meunerie La Rémy! Above is a whole tarte au sucre la ‘Rémy’ (maple sugar pie) that we bought for only $7.00, and Tomiko and I were able to bring it back to Toronto in one piece to share with our family. Other tarts inclued the tarte aux pommes la ‘Rémy’ and the tart aux poires et chocolat la ‘Rémy,’ but having read about tarte au sucre in Made in Quebec, that was the only pie I wanted to buy! We also bought an amandine, a rolled pastry filled with fruit and sprinkled with almonds, which we ate on the spot.
The mill, which dates back to 1827, was restored by Héritage Charlevoix and reopened in 2007. Visitors can tour the old mill, with its outdoor wood-burning oven, for $7.50. Here you can see the largest wheel mill in Quebec, which has a 7.3 metre diameter and a width of 1.22 metres. Although the bakery is open year-round, the mill is only open from mid-May to mid-October, so don’t be disappointed when dropping by in the middle of winter!
