I could eat this Asian slaw with sesame dressing every day. In case you didn’t notice, crunchy slaws are definitely popular at Kiku Corner this winter: see our other variations here and here. This one is colourful with Asian-inspired flavour combinations. The tangy dressing is not oily and holds up well against the fibrous cabbage.
Like most of my favourite recipes, ingredients can be switched depending on what’s in your fridge. Most of the veggies could be swapped – maybe lettuce or arugula instead of cabbage, Thai basil or parsley to replace the cilantro, and cucumber and shaved carrots for the celery. The possibilities are endless.
Asian Slaw with Sesame Dressing
Ingredients
- 1/2 purple cabbage
- 3 ribs celery
- 2 green onions
- 1/2 bunch cilantro
- 1 tbsp each white and black sesame seeds
- For the dressing
- 4 tbsp seasoned rice vinegar
- 1/2 tsp sesame oil
- 1/2 tsp grated ginger
- 1 tsp Japanese soy sauce
Instructions
- Remove outer leaves of cabbage and roughly chop into bite-sized pieces, adding to a large serving bowl.
- Slice celery, green onions, and chop cilantro and add to bowl.
- Sprinkle salad mixture with sesame seeds.
- For the dressing, mix the vinegar, oil, ginger, and soy sauce and pour over salad. Mix well.

Red cabbage is so yummy in a salad. We eat this all the time. I even like it braised. Another fine recipe shared today. Thanks for stopping by.
So timely – I have a head of cabbage in the fridge that I didn’t know what to do with. Going to make this slaw tomorrow!
