Crochet Banded Hat and Free Pattern

I designed this crochet banded hat because many of our readers loved the wool felt hat Tomiko wore when modelling our Giant Snowball Cowl. That one was purchased at Holt Renfrew, but if people liked the look of it, I wanted to create a pattern in crochet.

The crochet banded hat and the decorative flower is made of 100% merino Louet Gems sport-weight yarn from The Purple Purl on Queen St East. I suppose the band would look more like the wool felt hat if I had used a heavier yarn, but I like the look of a finer yarn in this hat.

The banded part of the hat is a double-thickness of crocheted posts, meaning that it is stretchy but also nice and warm around the ears. The double crochet stitches and the turning chains create a small scalloped edge which adds a slight decorative touch. The ornamental flower is crocheted in two parts and then sewn on the finished hat. To decrease, I divided the crown into quarters and added a single crochet 3 stitches together decrease at each quarter. This repeat as the crown decreases adds a line of stitches that looks like a seam.

Supplies

3.0 mm crochet hook

sport weight yarn (I used 1.5 skeins of Louet Gems 100% merino wool in sport weight)

4 stitch markers

Directions

For Brim

Ch 14.

Row 1) Dc in second st from hook. Dc in each stitch to the end (12 sts). Turn.

Row 2) Ch 2. Dc in same stitch as ch. FPdc in next stitch, then BPdc in same stitch, all the way across. Dc in last stitch. Turn.

Row 3) Ch 2. Dc in same stitch as ch. FPdc in next stitch, then BPdc in same stitch, all the way across. Dc in last stitch. Turn.

Rows 4+) Repeat rows 2 and 3 until band is 21″ (53.5 cm) long. As you crochet, there should be a double thickness of crocheted posts, as well as a scalloped edging along the sides.

To finish band: join ends of band together and sl st in each ch across to join to create a loop. Do not tie off yarn.

For body of hat:

Working across side edge of band, sc all the way around, evenly crocheting 120 sts. Working in spirals, sc in each stitch around until the whole hat reaches 5″ (12.5 cm) wide, about 17 rows.

To decrease:

Row 18) (Sc in next 27 sc, sc3tog over next 3 sts, pm in sc3tog) four times.

Row 19) Sc in each st around.

Row 20) (Sc to 2 sts before marked st, sc3tog over these 2 sts and marked st) four times, move marker to sc3tog.

Repeat rows 19-20 until 72 sts remain.

Sc in each st around.

Sc in next 15 sts, sc3tog over next 3 sts, pm in sc3tog (four times).

Repeat decrease each round, decreasing the sc sts in between the sc3tog by 2 sts each time, in order to keep the sc3tog directly above the sc3tog from the row below. Repeat until only 16 sc remain.

Fasten off, leaving a tail to sew top of hat closed.

Weave in ends. Block.

For the small flower:

Make a magic ring.

Round 1) Ch 3. Dc in magic ring; (Ch 4; 2 dc in magic ring) four times. Join with sl st to beginning ch.

Round 2) Ch 1. *(Sc 1 in 4 ch space below. Ch 6 in same ch space. Quadruple crochet, triple crochet, double crochet, triple crochet, quadruple crochet in same ch space. Ch 6 then connect to ch space with a sc). Repeat from * all the way around. Sl st to first ch and fasten off.

For the large flower:

Make a magic ring.

Round 1) Ch 4. Dc in magic ring. *(Ch 2. Dc in magic ring.) Repeat from * three times (5 dcs with 2 ch in between). Join with firstch with sl st.

Round 2) Ch 3; 3 dc in ch 2 space below. (Ch 2; 4 dc next ch 2 space below) four times. Ch 2. Join with sl st to beginning ch.

Round 3) Ch 3, 3 dc in same space below. *(Ch 5. 4 dc in next ch 2 space below) four times. Ch 5. Join with sl st to beginning ch.

Round 4) Ch 1. *(Sc in next three dc below. Sc 1 in 5 ch space below. Ch 6 in same ch space. Quadruple crochet, 2 triple crochet, double crochet, 2 triple crochet, quadruple crochet in same ch space. Ch 6 then connect to ch space with a sc). Repeat from * all the way around. Sl st to first ch and fasten off.

Block both flowers; layer small flower onto large flower, offsetting the petals. Sew onto hat band; I like to sew itonto the seam to hide it. Weave in ends.

Are you sure to Fpdc and Bpdc in the same stitch? This doubles the stitches in the row, (24 stitches).

    1. Hi Barbara,
Yes, initially you work the Fpdc and Bpdc in the same stitch. Then as you work the repeats, you Fpdc in the Fpdc, and Bpdc in the Bpdc. Hope this helps!
