I sewed V9053 out of pink rayon challis for the wedding we attended this spring. V9053 is a lined, sleeveless dress that has a close-fitting bodice, deep V-neckline, gathers at shoulders and waist, waistband, flared skirt and back zipper. A narrow hem finishes the bottom.
The bride of the wedding we attended has an Indian background, so I knew lots of the aunties would wear a lot of colourful saris. I wanted to make sure I was wearing lots of colour too, so I chose to use this pink challis fabric. Although I didn’t have enough fabric to make the floor-length version, there was enough left to make a top. Using these scraps, I made Simplicity 8061, a v-neck top, now a tried-and-true favourite.
I originally had planned to sew and wear my yellow V9167, but in the end I thought it was too casual. So then I decided on making V9053. I had purchased a pink floral rayon challis from Fabricland and wanted to make view B. Unfortunately I only had purchased 3 m of fabric, and didn’t have enough for the floor-length skirt. Instead, I made view A, the knee-length version which may be more versatile. Ryan and I are attending a wedding in December, so I plan to wear this again.
I chose size 16 and did an FBA, adding 2″ on each side of the bodice. This was the first time I did an FBA with gathers, but I think I managed to make it work. I used the tutorial Lazy Stitching has on how to do this. I lined the bodice with a white cotton voile, which is what I normally use to line summer dresses. The cotton voile is very comfortable, and the whole dress felt great to wear in the hot weather this summer.
The pattern for V9053 is still available here.

I love this dress and you look wonderful it in! I’m new-ish to sewing and my next goal is to make a dress that I can wear out. I’ve made a few nice pleated skirts, but sleeves are so hard for me! Pants legs are even harder so I’m waiting to tackle those. I’m looking forward to following your pattern!
Found you at the Pretty Pintastic Party today!
I haven’t done any pants either…not yet!
The color is so pretty, and it fits you perfectly! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
Wow, that is a lovely dress. You did a great job sewing it. Thanks for sharing on Merry Monday.
Hello!
That dress is so beautiful.Yoou made it so well and it fits you perfectly. Thanks for the referral.
I’m currently planning on making this with my own alterations but You did such a great job with fit I was wondering about sizing. Seems way off to normal but everything now days is never right. Do you have any tips for me of everyday sizing vs the pattern sizing and you do not have to tell me your actual size if you’re not comfortable 🙂
Thank you! I found the sizing to be pretty accurate for myself, as I’ve sewn from Vogue before. However, sewing pattern sizes are different than ready-made clothing sizes, and size numbers vary across brands. My tip is to open the pattern pieces and see what the size is actually printed on the tissue! I chose a size 16 because my high bust is 40″, and then I did an FBA as my full bust measurement is 44″. The skirt is pretty loose and I don’t have trouble fitting my hips, especially in a dress like this. The waist ended up fitting, I think as a 32 or 33″, with no changes. If I were to sew this again, though, I might try a small swayback adjustment. Hope this helps!
Thank you so so so much!!! And thank you for responding it helps a lot!!
