The Laurus Hat is a beautiful and easy hat designed by Dianna Walla. I found her blog Paper Tiger when I was browsing knitting blogs one day. I was surprised to see she had designed the Pine Bough Cowl, one of the first items saved when we first joined Ravelry.
So I fell down the rabbit hole of reading her blog. I’m amazed at all the Norwegian knitting and patterns she has done…and she now lives in Montreal! She inspired me to try my hand at colourwork, so I knit her Laurus Hat (my second hat, after the Pennyroyal Hat). I saw a hat knit up with a fold up brim by Kiyomi Burgin, and wanted to try that too (a fold up brim is so much warmer in the winter).
I used one skein of Woolfolk Far that I had bought at Espace Tricot this summer in Montreal. It’s a deliciously soft and cozy yarn that knits up with a slight halo. I used colour 13 Dirty Seafoam as the main colour and 17 Mink as the contrast. This yarn is a wonder! It is a merino chainette yarn that is so very soft. According to the Woolfolk website, Woolfolk yarns combine the highest quality wool with ethical, sustainable practices. Farmers in the Patagonian Grasslands grow the Ultimate Merino® wool from which the yarn is made. The yarn has a micron count of 17.5, same as cashmere, but with the wear of merino.
I used Dianna Walla’s tutorials for dominant strands and trapping floats. The hat used almost one full skein of the main colour yarn. There is enough of the contrast grey for a cushy pompom to top it all off!
