The Diamond Hat is a free pattern by Anne Mizoguchi, one of a series of colourwork hats. I used three colours of Rooster Almerino DK, a soft alpaca-merino blend yarn. I used Ocean as the main colour, and Gooseberry and Smoothie as the contrast colours.
Since I have a loose gauge, I used 3.0 circular needle for the ribbing, and a 3.5 mm circular needle for the hat. The free pattern three sizes: baby, child, adult. I made the adult size and it fits well. I love how stranded colourwork adds a second layer of yarn to make the hat extra warm.
If the name Anne Mizoguchi rings a bell, it’s because I knit her Herringbone Hat and it appeared on our blog a few weeks ago! The Diamond Hat and the Herringbone Hat are part of a series of free colourwork hats that are available on Ravelry.
I actually knit this hat back in the summertime; I cast off when Tomiko and I stayed with friends at a cabin up near Britt in August. The blue, green, and pink look like the lichen-covered granite of the Canadian Shield.
Don’t be daunted by the three colours; the pattern is written so that you’re only handling two colours at a time. It’s a great pattern for a beginner, since floats are rather short. Also, there are no decreases in the stranded knitting. Of course, you can knit the hat to be slouchier by repeating the colourwork before you start your decreases.
I left this Diamond Hat pompomless, but you could of course add one. A solid colour would look great, but I think a pompom with all three colours would look spectacular!
The free pattern for the Diamond Hat by Anne Mizoguchi is available on Ravelry.
This finished hat, hand knit in a merino alpaca blend yarn, is available to purchase in our Etsy shop.
Your hat is so pretty. I love the colours that you have chosen. I cannot knit at present but hope to learn this year #creativemonday
I love the colors! My daughter will want one like this; I’ll have to look at the pattern to see if it can be made smaller (and then ask my mother to knit it, she’s way better – and faster – at that then I am).
Thank you for sharing at The Really Crafty Link Party. Pinned!
