The Winter Sunrise Hat by Elinor Brown is perfect for winter.
The pattern starts with a provisional cast on. Following the chart, I knit the hat up to the top. The knit decreases form their own lovely colourwork pattern ridges.
Once the stranded knitting and decreases are done, the provisional stitches are picked up and you knit insulating foldover brim that flips to the inside. I used 3.25 mm circular needles, but could have sized down to 2.75 mm. The Winter Sunrise Hat fits an extra large adult head, and is exceptionally warm. I think having the insulating lining is a great idea for the incredibly cold winter we’ve been having!
I used Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Sport in Daffodil and Plum Crazy, both yarns that were in my stash. These colours have sufficiently different values that allow the overall pattern to be quite striking.
The stranded knitting chart has easy, short repeats. Due to the short repeats, there is no need to trap floats. To finish it off, I topped with a big, fluffy pompom.

This finished hat, knit in 100% merino yarn, is available for purchase from our Etsy shop.

This hat is gorgeous. The yarn really compliments the design!
I’m an avid knitter, and adore the colors in this. Where did you get the pom pom?? I made one the other day, but it didn’t turn out that great….

I made it with a pompom maker! I also read that if you steam the pompoms, it helps them fluff out and get fuller.
So pretty. Winter sunrise is just the perfect name.
