I’d like to introduce my second published pattern, the Marrakech Hat! Yarn People‘s second issue focuses on brioche with a multiculturalism theme, and I’m proud to have my pattern included!
The Marrakech Hat hat uses interlocking crochet in two colours to form a geometric pattern. The 2 colours, A and B, work in 2-passes. This creates a thicker fabric, and it is also reversible. However, be careful to follow the instructions as to when to leave the non-working yarns in front or back of the piece. While working out the pattern, sometimes I had issues with my current round because the round below had a mistake!
My last trip to Morocco last spring inspired this crochet hat. Since Tomiko and I grew up in the Middle East, we love geometric Islamic design. I found that this stitch pattern was reminiscent of the tile and mosaic that is all over the Middle East and Morocco. Thus, I named this pattern in honour of the beautiful red city of Marrakech.
To crochet the Marrakech Hat, I used lovely alpaca yarn from Shed Chetwyn Farms on Prince Edward County. It’s important to use two contrasting colours that have different values so the interlocking crochet design comes out. When done properly, interlocking crochet is reversible; the back side of the Marrakech Hat shows the same design but with the colours reversed and the design turned by 90 degrees.
Tomiko and I took these photos when we visited the Pretty River Valley Country Inn back in December. They had a month-old Icelandic foal that loved to get scritches. Obviously I had to hop a fence and pet the friendly horses! Mama horse was very patient. The little one was very curious: it untied my boots by chewing on the laces!
After publishing our crochet Berlin Hat, I have so many ideas for patterns!
The Marrakech Hat is available in the second issue of Yarn People on Ravelry.
I love your crochet hat! I wish I talent, I tried to crochet once and I quickly gave up. Your pictures are beautiful. That horse farm with the snow is fairytale like.

Beautiful and impressive. I know how difficult it can be to work with more than one yarn at once and the fact that you created it! Wow!
Beautiful pattern! I just wish I could crochet better.
It just takes practice; you can do it!
Wonderful! I love the pattern!
I host a new link up party every Thursday called Creative Compulsions. It’s primary requirement is that your link be to something you’ve made. You make beautiful things! I’d like to invite you to link.
The hat is absolutely stunning. I can’t believe how snowy it’s still there. Here we’re still having some cold nights but during the day it almost looks like summer.
Thank you for sharing at The Really Crafty Link Party this week. Pinned!
Thank you!
That’s lovely, and I love the idea that it is reversible too.
Look at you, crochet designer! How fabulous. Congrats
Thank you!
Just love it, and so happy to see a crochet pattern from you, now I might actually make it! thanks so much for sharing on craft schooling Sunday!
Simply stunning, and it looks so cosy. I’m not sure I’m skilled enough to try, but it looks amazing
