DIY: Knit Garter and Lace Shawl by Julie Turjoman

I knit my first lace shawl, the Garter and Lace Shawl by Julie Turjoman. It’s from the Spring/Summer 2018 issue of Vogue Knitting, and it’s the cover design in a beautiful blue.

The shawl is an asymmetrical triangle shape of two types of lace with garter stitch in between. As I’ve only knit hats and sweaters before, I was amused to see that the pattern starts with casting on just one stitch!

I used a 400 m skein of merino-silk fingering yarn that Ryan got me for my birthday last year. It’s by a Canadian indie dyer from the Northwest Territories, Red Door Yarns. I was able to knit the whole shawl with just one skein…only a small tangle of yarn was left. Overall I found the yarn was beautiful to work with. The silk gives the yarn a beautiful sheen and drape, and the changing pink-red-purple colours kept things interesting.

Before you knit this, however, take a look at the errata on the Vogue Knitting website and tips from Ravelry.

Here are my edits for a successful knit:

In the first garter ridge lace chart section, Row 1 should be:
Row 1 (RS) K1, pm, *k1, yo, k3, SK2P, k3, yo; rep from * to last st, pm, kfb — 1 st inc’d.

In the first chevron lace chart section, Row 1 should be:
Row 1 (RS) K1, sm, *k1, yo, k3, S2KP, k3, yo; rep from * until 8 sts rem, pm, k to last st, kfb — 1 st inc’d.

Row 2 should be:
Row 2 Kfb, k to m, sm, *k1, p9; rep from * to m, k1 — 1 st inc’d.

Row 4 should be:
Row 4 Kfb, k to m, sm, *k1, p7, k2; rep from * to end — 1 st inc’d.

Row 7 should be: Row 7 K to marker, sm, *p4, yo, S2KP, yo, p3; rep from * to marker, sm, k to end.

After the lace section repeats, the instructions tell you to knit in garter stitch, continuously increasing as directed. I knit a few extra rows of garter stitch to use up more yarn (and thus played yarn chicken). This is so I wouldn’t be left with an unusable amount. To bind off, I used a yarn-over bind off from this tutorial. The yarn-over bind off has a yarn-over between every stitch, and is stretch yet sturdy for the edge of a shawl.

Unfortunately you can’t buy the pattern for the Garter and Lace Shawl by itself. However, you can buy the Vogue Knitting magazine issue here.
