I’ve created a roundup of some beautiful free knit hat patterns. Lots of these are in my own Ravelry queue! Of course, you can always browse the massive archive of free patterns on Ravelry to find more free patterns. Many of these patterns are by established designers, so they shouldn’t have errors and should be well written. However, I have not tested them, so always check for errata to prevent future headaches! Trying out a designer’s free pattern is a good way to get to know how the designer writes, so if you like his or her instructions and methods, you might feel more comfortable purchasing another pattern of theirs.
In no particular order:
Facilito Headband by Shireen Nadir (Blue Brick)
The Facilito Headband is available on Ravelry and uses 91m of DK weight yarn. As the headband size is adjustable, this is a great pattern to use up small amounts of leftover yarn. The lacy cable design is just so beautiful!
Ade Beanie by Ola Ogunlolu
I found the Ade Beanie via Pinterest; it is a beautiful hat using about 75 m of super bulky yarn. This free knit hat pattern is available on Ravelry. I love the sample photo above; it looks like a cupcake! The pattern includes texture using knit and purl stitches. According to the pattern’s Ravelry page, “The name “Ade” (pronounced Ah-Day), is a traditional Yoruba word which translates to “crown” or “royalty”, and was inspired by the crown like effect created by the combination of textures in this design.”
Hanami Toque by Heather Neufeld
The beautiful Hanami Toque has one size written for DK weight yarn. According to Ravelry, “Hanami is a hat inspired by the budding trees of springtime in Vancouver, BC. The simple lace pattern creates a flowing wave which continues right up through the crown decreases. Hanami means flower viewing in Japanese.”
1898 Hat by Kristine Byrnes
This free hat pattern, published by the Seamen’s Church Institute, uses up to 184 m of worsted weight yarn. The construction of this hat was inspired by one pictured in a magazine published around 1910. This is a popular pattern, with over 4000 projects in Ravelry! For a crochet pattern by the Seamen’s Church Institute, check out the Crochet Seafarer’s Cap, which I made a few years ago. This charity group accepts knit and crochet hats, which they then distribute to sailors for the holidays. If you’re interested in knitting for charity, check out the website!
Cengkeh Beanie by Amelia Putri
The Cengkeh Beanie includes one size using 300 m of DK weight yarn. According to Ravelry, “Cengkeh means clove in Bahasa Indonesia. It’s the aromatic flower buds and commonly used as a spice. It is native to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia.. The lacy motif in this hat represents the clove buds.”
Rafa’s Hat by Joji Locatelli
Rafa’s Hat is a basic toque pattern using worsted weight yarn. The pattern includes directions for three adult sizes. Although at first glance it might seem quite plain, Rafa’s Hat includes ribbing as well as textured rows along the crown. This will make it interesting to knit!
Pome Hat by Agata Smektala
The Pome Hat uses 220 m of worsted weight yarn. Even though the pattern contains directions for medium size only, you can adjust the size of the finished hat using smaller/larger needles and finer/thicker yarn.
Snowdrop Beret by ms designs
The Snowdrop Beret includes just one size using worsted weight yarn. To get another size, it is also possible to knit in DK yarn to make a more fitted hat. This hat is in my queue, as I plan to knit it using a special skein of farm yarn.
Garter Ear Flap Hat by Purl Soho
The Garter Ear Flap Hat uses Aran weight yarn. The pattern includes six sizes for babies to adults, and short rows create the ear flaps. The pattern has also been translated into Swedish and Italian. I’m knitting a couple of these hats for two of my friends’ toddlers.

That’s a great selection! I usually crochet has these days but I think some of these might tempt me back to knitting!
They are all so pretty. I’m actually knitting a hat for my daughter now, but I’m not following any specific pattern.
Thank you for sharing at The Really Crafty Link Party. Pinned!
