I knit the Débutant Bonnet for my friend’s new baby. A few weeks ago, I wrote about the garter ear flap hat that I knit for his older sister.
To knit the bonnet, I used leftover Woolfolk FÅR yarn from the Laurus Hat I knit last year. This yarn is exceedingly soft. It’s a 100% merino yarn that uses a chainette construction. According to the Woolfolk website, Woolfolk yarns combine the highest quality wool with ethical, sustainable practices. Farmers in the Patagonian Grasslands grow the Ultimate Merino® wool from which the yarn is made. The yarn has a micron count of 17.5, same as cashmere, but with the wear of merino. I’m sure Sulo won’t think it’s itchy!
I first cast on the border and ties using a bit of the leftover dark teal, called Dirty Seafoam. I then knit the rest of the hat in grey Mink. The hat includes a bit of shaping at the back neck, but otherwise it’s a quick and easy knit. I think I finished knitting it in one day!
As the grey and blue bonnet looked rather plain to me, I added a bit of starburst embroidery. The hat doesn’t look like much when laid flat, but it has the most adorable little peaked top once it’s on a round head!
The pattern includes a few infant sizes, and I knit the largest size for Sulo. It’s his first winter, but I wanted to make sure that it wasn’t too small; better too big than too small!
