Claudia Q, the owner of EweKnit, designed the Oliver Sweater. EweKnit is one of our favourite Toronto yarn stores, and thankfully it’s just a short walk from where we live!

North 40: Baby Sweaters and Accessories Vol. 1 is EweKnit’s first book, with all patterns designed by Claudia. I bought this book not just to support our LYS, but because friends are having babies and it’s fun to knit things for them! This book contains a good selection of sweaters, hats, and socks for newborn babies all the way to age four.

The Oliver Sweater is a simple pullover sweater with a convenient button placket. Babies have big heads so the button placket allows you to pull the sweater over their heads and then fasten them up without having a gaping neckline. The button placket has space for five buttons, and I used five matching white ones from my stash.

The hem and the sleeves have some stripes added for visual interest. The Oliver sweater is knit top-down, my favourite construction method. When casting on, you knit to the bottom of the placket by knitting flat back and forth and adding raglan shaping. Once you finish the placket, you join and knit the body in the round. This allows you to have fewer ends to weave in once you get to the stripes.

Since I have a loose gauge, I knit this sweater with 2.5 mm needles instead of the recommended 3.5 mm. I also used yarn from my stash, a soft and versatile merino-cotton blend called Classic Elite Yarns Song. The blue that I used is called Sky, and the white is Snow. A few rows of garter stitch finish off the bottom hem and sleeve cuffs.

Since the sweater is so small, it took me just five days to knit! However, the only problem is the proportionally higher amount of ends to weave in compared to an adult sweater. It took me a week to get around to weaving in the ends!
