McCall’s M7920 helped me get my sewing mojo (my sewjo) back! I always seem to not feel like sewing all winter. Then, once Toronto warms up enough for bare legs, I want to sew ALL THE DRESSES!
The simple silhouette and button front of this dress caught my eye. However, I didn’t want to sew it in a solid colour because I was worried it might look like a nurse’s dress. Luckily I had a summery printed fabric in my stash!
I sewed M7920 out of a linen rayon blend fabric that I bought at Fabricland last year. This fabric has a beautiful drape and is cool to the touch. I chose this pattern because it has a button front. Last year I finally bought a buttonhole attachment for my sewing machine and used it to make my first shirtdress. Buoyed by the quality of those buttonholes, I wanted to make another! The M7920 has a so-called kimono sleeve as it is an all-in-one sleeve and bodice pattern piece. The first time I sewed a bodice like this was in my striped dress, and I actually loved the fit.
I had finished sewing the dress in May, but then I had to wait for my buttons. Originally I wanted to use tortoiseshell buttons, but I couldn’t find any that would complement the yellow flowers on my fabric. So, I decided to us ten black 1″ buttons, but I had none in my stash. I couldn’t find any at our local sewing supply stores, so I bought them online.
I sewed view B in a size 18 with no major adjustments other than shortening the skirt by about 15 cm. Normally I have to do an FBA on all my tops, but after liking the fit of my toile, I didn’t make any changes. The front buttonbands have facings, but I had run out of fabric. To solve this problem, I just used the muslin that I used for my toile. Also, I didn’t have enough fashion fabric for the pockets, so again I used scrap toile. As women’s pockets are never big enough, I enlarged them but I could have even made them bigger!
I love a knee-length skirt, and this is a dress that I will wear both at home and at work. Luckily I have some more printed linen-rayon fabric in blue and white, and I am tempted to sew another M7920!
If you want to sew one for yourself, get the pattern here!

So gorgeous! Beautiful print, and very flattering style.
Hello, I am always on the lookout for a fellow seamstress. Your pick for the fabric is perfect for this pattern. I’m glad you got your sewing mojo back!
Are you a member of https://www.facebook.com/groups/SimplicityBurdaMcCallsALLPATTERNS/? That would be a wonderful place to show this off. Sew on!

Very pretty dress and I love your fabric choice too.
That turned out so nice! It reminds me I bought a few patterns to make a dress for myself that I should get started on.
So cute, and love the print, very summery, I may have to look into buying that pattern, for when, eventually I am as clever as you and can actually make it, very much my kind of dress.
Thank you for sharing your post at this week’s #TrafficJamWeekend Linky Party.

[…] Linen Rayon Button-Front Dress […]
What a wonderful dress. I love shirt dresses, but like you, usually need to do a FBA (which I’m not that good at TBH) May have to give this a try!
Lovely! It’s been years since I sewed–must do it again. I made a lot of my own clothes in my teens and twenties. Then in my thirties I was making curtains and pillows. Then nothing! I wouldn’t even know where to start in selecting a pattern size these days.
What a gorgeous dress, and it looks great on you! Thanks for sharing this pattern with us, I think it’s time I bought another sewing machine and started making clothes again! 🙂
That’s a fantastic dress, the style looks great on you. Thanks for linking up with #pocolo and hope to see you back later this week
This is such a great dress! It looks amazing on you. You are so talented! Thanks for sharing and linking up with me.

Wow, you are so talented! At first glance this looked like a dress you would find in a boutique. It’s a gorgeous colour and the cut sits so beautifully. How do you do that!? Thank you for joining us for the #DreamTeamLinky
Super cute! The colour and style of the dress looks great on you!
Super cute! I am looking to buy this pattern myself. Are the pattern pieces for the fuller skirt curved at the hemline? I have a border print I’m wanting to sew up. Thanks!
Hi! The full skirt pattern pieces were curved, so the border print wouldn’t work on those. But I believe the straight skirt pieces were straight!
