This is the fourth featherweight cardigan here on Kiku Corner. It will also not be the last. Meinhilde knitted the other three in about the same time it took me to knit this one. She is a very fast knitter, while I am a slow one. My version is a bit different because I wanted a style to wear with dresses.
The Featherweight Cardigan, published in 2009, is a very popular pattern on Ravelry. There have been over 10,000 projects recorded! It also lives up to its name, as it uses light fingering or laceweight yarn. The cardigan uses a top-down, seamless, raglan-sleeve construction and includes bust sizes from 32″ to 62″.
This featherweight cardigan used only one skein of Juniper Moon Farm Findley, a laceweight yarn made from 50% merino and 50% silk. It has a beautiful sheen and drape. The fine yarn makes an elegant material, beautiful for a fancier cardigan. The cropped length is great for wearing over a dress without obscuring your waist.
Even though it took me quite a few months to knit this, it was an easy and enjoyable knit. The pattern’s simple but clever construction makes it a good travel project. It is also a compact project because it requires only one skein. I started knitting this cropped featherweight cardigan on my and Meinhilde’s trip to Iceland last year. It was very easy to take this project to a cafe and knit a few rows in between our drinks and snacks.
This cropped featherweight cardigan is shorter than the original pattern and has sleeves that just cover the elbows. This pattern is easy to alter to your wardrobe needs – make it a little longer or shorter according to your preference. I made it in size 42 and sized down my needles to 3.0 mm (US 2½) since my gauge is very loose. Before blocking, the cardigan looked tiny – like it would fit a small child! Thankfully it loosened up and grew to the correct size after blocking.
I plan to make another featherweight cardigan in Juniper Moon Farm Findley, but in a deep red colour. This next one will be a slightly larger size with longer sleeves and body.
Check out Meinhilde’s three versions:
- cropped grey cardigan in Juniper Moon Farm Findley
- cropped mustard yellow cardigan in Loops & Threads Woolike
- pink cardigan in Juniper Moon Farm Findley
The Featherweight Cardigan pattern is available here on Ravelry.

Cute. Wish I could wear something like that but it doesn’t fit my body shape. – Margy
That is so cute and I just love the color you’ve chosen to use to make it too.
Very cute, and added a nice touch to your outfit!
I love this cardigan. I looked at the others you had links for and on Ravelry too and it sure can look different knit in different lengths. I have favorited this cardigan to possibly make one when I have time. I am not a fast knitter either and only knot in the evenings.
that’s a fantastic knit and I love the colour
