I knit A Simple Baby Pullover, a free pattern by Erica Kempf Broughton. The free pattern includes four sizes, from 0-6 months to 2-3 years. I chose to knit the 0-6 month size using yarn from my stash. The designer says that this is a great for a first time sweater knitter or an experienced knitter looking for a quick and easy project.
I used almost two skeins of West Yorkshire Spinners Bluefaced Leicester Aran Solid Colours. This was my first time using BFL, and I am a convert! I had read about the wonders of BFL in books and blogs, but had never knit with it before. It is soft and has a lovely drape, even though it’s 100% wool. Even our mom, who is very sensitive to itchy wool, thinks it is soft!
The Simple Baby Pullover is knit top-down with raglan sleeves. It has a cute button placket so that you can easily pull it over your baby’s head. I chose three leather-look buttons from my stash, and I think they look cute. Another bonus of the pattern is that it is available in English, French, and Italian!
Baby knitting is so quick, and this sweater just took me a few weeks to knit. Due to my loose gauge, I used 3.5 mm needles instead of the recommended 4.5 mm ones.

Knitted gifts are so personal and meaningful!
The pullover is adorable!

[…] I had just the yarn in my stash! I’ve used 100% Bluefaced Leicester yarn before, in the Simple Baby Pullover and Free Pattern by Erica Kempf Broughton. Bluefaced Leicester (BFL) is a breed of longwool sheep developed in England in the late 1800s. It […]
Hi, Meinhilde,
I also am making “A Simple Baby Pullover” by Erica Kempf Broughton. May I ask where you measured the 8″ called for after joining the underarms, size 6-12 months. The pattern says to ‘knit every round until sweater measures 8″‘, then I added the ribbing, so I measured the 8″ from the neckline, but the body looks way off. Yours looks proportional (and cute). Did you measure from the the underarms?
Thank you!
Hi Eleni,
I believe the instructions mean that the 8″ should be from the armpit down, so it doesn’t include the yoke. Also, just after putting this on my own kid, the arms are kind of short. I would lengthen the arms by 1.5 or 2″ before adding the ribbing.
Hope this helps!
