DIY: Mohair Entrelac Headband with Lined Ears

This is my second entrelac headband because I love this design. See my first variation here. Headbands are a Canadian winter necessity for anyone with a ponytail. For the lucky people that don’t have wicked winters, you may not know that a warm head covering is mandatory to keep one’s head warm. Hats are ideal, but not great in all situations – especially with a ponytail. A headband is the appropriate alternative.

This mohair entrelac headband is based on a pattern called Grey Gardens. It’s a free pattern by Kate Burge and Rachel Price published on Knitty. The original pattern calls for worsted weight, but I used a fingering weight Wellington Fibres mohair mix instead. This yarn is a luxurious mix of 60% goat mohair and 40% wool. The mohair adds warmth, a beautiful halo, and strength to the yarn. Mohair also dyes wonderfully, so this headband has a lovely saturated purple colour with a hint of sheen.

Since I knit this once before, it was easy to modify the pattern for the finer weight warn. I used a 2.5 mm (US 1½ ) circular needle and cast on 30 stitches instead of the 24 in the pattern. This modification adds one more section to the width and makes the headband slightly wider.

The feature I am most proud of in this mohair entrelac headband is the two additional patches I added to the inside. These patches are a lining of knit fabric that add extra warmth and additional wind protection. My ears are the most sensitive part in winter. Once they get cold, I get a headache and become cranky. Mohair is particularly lovely because it’s warmer than wool, thus a headband like this will surely keep your ears warm!

To make these patches, I put the headband on and marked the place of my ears using two locking stitch markers. Then I took off the headband and picked up 16 stitches from the inside edge of the headband. Try to make this section slightly wider than your ear to give better coverage. After that, I knit the width of the band in stockinette stitch and then cast off. At this point, there was a flap with one end anchored on the headband and the other side loose. The last step was attaching the loose end to the other side of the headband.

This knit headband is available in our Etsy shop here.

    1. Hi Dawn,
All the instructions are included in the pattern on the Knitty website!

  2. It’s gorgeous, that colour really suits you. I usually just go for a hat but do often put my hair up these days (it’s got really long with not going to the hair dressers in the pandemic!) so a head band might be just what I need.

  5. Hi Tomiko & Meinhilde! I love your entrelac headband ♥ and I totally agree about our bitter Canadian Winters! Cold ears are the worst! At least this year the masks will keep our noses from freezing on the inside! LOL I hope you enjoyed our unseasonal warm spell (I can’t believe it was 20 degrees here today!).

  6. Looks great. Headbands aren’t really big around here right now – which is exactly the reason my kid is obsessed with them #dreamteam

  7. I love to do entrelac. It’s so much fun to create the shapes and watch the project come together. I learned how to knit and purl backwards in order to avoid the constant turning while making an entrelac cowl.

  8. Gorgeous headband. I love the color and the twist is such a fun detail! Thanks for linking with me.

  9. […] the yarn looks familiar, it is. Last year I completed the Mohair Entrelac Headband in a similar shade of Wellington’s mohair mix yarn. I highly recommend using a mohair blend […]
