This honey soap is another one of my favourite homemade body products. And it may be one of the easiest since I didn’t make the soap from scratch. Making soap is a more complicated process than I’d like to do at home. This is why a soap base is an easy alternative.
For this honey soap project, I used a brick of Shea Butter Melt and Pour Soap Base from New Directions Aromatics. We tried a few other bases, but this one resulted in the most moisturizing soap.
This honey soap is almost cheating because it takes almost no effort. It only requires melting the base, adding the honey, and then pouring the mixture into a mold. That’s it – so easy. Once you have this recipe figured out, you could also try other additives (such as essential oils) and other mold shapes.
When Meinhilde and I became interested in making our own body products, we borrowed all the library books on the topic. Many of the books just contained recipes and cute ways of packaging the products. The most intriguing and useful book I read is called Beyond Soap, by Dr. Sandy Skotnicki. She is a Toronto-based dermatologist (and much more), who simplified the whole body product world for me.
Dr. Skotnicki explains that we generally use too much soap on our bodies (in the shower or bath only – we should still wash our hands frequently), which causes the usual winter dryness. Using less soap and finding a more moisturizing variety will prevent overly dry skin. This honey soap is very moisturizing and is great for the colder months. I highly recommend reading this book.
DIY: Make your own Honey Soap
Equipment
- one heat-safe glass measuring cup (at least 2 cup capacity)
- one large pot
- one metal rack, like the kind used for canning
- one sterilized spoon
- a soap mold, or old fashioned cookie molds (see photos)
Ingredients
- 1/2 brick Shea Butter Melt and Pour Soap Base
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 tsp honey
Instructions
- Add metal rack to pot. Add approximately 2 cm water and bring to a simmer.
- Add soap base to glass measuring cup.
- Set measuring cup on rack in pot with simmering water and leave for approximately 10 minutes or until base melted. Mix with spoon.
- Take off of heat and allow to cool for a few minutes. Mix in vanilla and honey.
- Lay molds out on a piece of newspaper.
- Pour melted mixture into sterilized molds. Allow mixture to cool and pop soap out of molds.

This sounds so easy, it inspires me (a non-crafter – gasp!) to give it a shot! LOL
I’ve been reluctant to try making soap because of all of the equipment needed…as well as a little fear of lye! Using melt and pour is a great idea!
I would love to make my own soap, I think honey soap sounds delightful. You make it sound pretty easy. #mmbc

I LOVE this idea! I think what I love most is that you use a soap base. I have wanted to make soap but it seems to be a rather long process. Using a soap base is perfect — I never knew of it before!

Hello there! How much honey do you use in this soap? I don’t see the measurement… Love to try this soon for winter. Thanks!
Thanks for pointing that typo out! The batch only uses 1 tsp of honey. I’ve fixed the recipe.
