I knit the Baby Brights Tights for my own baby. I used almost 1.75 full skeins of variegated, superwash sock weight yarn from my stash. Naturally Yarns NZ Waikiwi Prints is 55% Merino, 20% Nylon, 15% Alpaca, and 10% Possum. Choosing superwash yarn is a good choice for these pants, as they can now be machine washed and dried. The knit fabric turned out soft and slightly fuzzy. I think the bit of possum added a lovely halo to the tights.
I found the pattern in our copy of Sock Yarn One-Skein Wonders®: 101 Patterns That Go Way Beyond Socks! The pattern, as written in the book, comes in two sizes, 6 months and 12 months. I knit the 6 month size using 2.0 mm and 2.5 mm needles. However, if you get pattern from the Lion Brand Yarn website, there is also an 18-month size.
My baby is only 3 months old, so the tights are still a bit long on him. That’s no problem, since I can easily roll up the cuffs to shorten them. The tights also fit a bit snugly on his bum, since he has a chunky cloth diaper bum. However, the knit fabric is stretchy and so the pants are still comfortable!
The baby brights tights are knit flat in two pieces, bottom up. The cuffs are plain garter stitch, and the waistband is a folded over 4×4 rib. After sewing the pieces together into pants, you sew the waistband down and insert some elastic. The elastic waist also makes changing baby easy. Luckily I had both the yarn and the elastic in my stash! I purchased a roll of braided elastic last year from Leather and Sewing Supply Depot when I made a bunch of masks.
The two flat pieces are identical, so when you sew them together, they make tights with identical front and back. Some knitters on Ravelry stated they altered the pattern to knit it in the round. Since I knit faster in the round than flat, I’m sure I could have whipped these up in a couple of days. However, knitting these flat is a great way to practice purling and seaming!

Best dressed baby!
Oh my goodness! These are beautiful and so very practical too. #MMBC
How really cute these are, I love using variegated wool. I’m not a knitter, I like to crochet, but my Mother knitted and I’m pretty sure I have a pair of tights very similar to these that she made for my firstborn. ( I have a few items of baby clothing from all my babies, even though the youngest is now 10.)
Thank you! I never knew what to do with variegated yarn, but baby clothes fit the bill!
Oh my goodness, these are the cutest little baby tights ever! I love the variegated green yarn that you used. Such a fun color. And your little one is so darling! Thanks for linking with me.
