DIY: Knit Marshmallow Baby Set by Lilia Vanini

Here is my finished Marshmallow Baby set by @liliacraftparty for Kenji. Lilia kindly gifted me a pattern and I chose the Marshmallow Baby Set for my own baby! It includes a cardigan, bloomers, and a hat using three colours of sport-weight yarn.

Tomiko and I split the work of the Marshmallow Baby Set. She knit the hat, while I knit the cardigan and bloomers.

For the bloomers, I cast on the 12-18 month size because Kenji’s a big boy, and summer is just starting. I used some Cascade 220 Superwash Sport in dark teal, purple, and gold from my stash. Superwash is helpful for baby items, since I can just throw these in the wash with the rest of our laundry!

I made a bigger size so they’ll fit over his big cloth diaper bum! You knit the bloomers top down, starting with a stockinette band. Then you purl one round to encourage the elastic channel to fold over, before continuing with stockinette. The instructions include short row shaping so the back is longer than the front, which helps with fitting over a bum. You knit the bloomers in the round with rounds of colourwork every 5 rounds, then you divide for the front and the back. I found this part tricky because I ended up with a lot of ends to weave in! Then you graft the front and back part together.

After knitting some ribbing around the legholes, I sewed the elastic channel before finally blocking! My baby is rather chubby so the elastic doesn’t do much. However, it would be helpful to fit a skinny baby.

The bloomers look great over a onesie or with just a t-shirt!

Tomiko knit the hat for Kenji. It is knit in the round from the bottom up, starting with ribbing. The hat has the same stripes and colourwork as the cardigan.

For the cardigan, I knit the 12-18 month size. Even though I knit a larger size, I was worried that his fat little sausage arms wouldn’t fit in these sleeves! Luckily it’s still big enough that he can wear it in the next few months. To finish, I chose purple buttons from T’s stash.

I’m getting some strong 90s vibes from my colour choice!

You knit the cardigan top down and flat. The raglan sleeves have increases that look slightly lacy, which was new for me. I had knit raglan cardigans before (like my one, two, three Featherweight cardigans) but the Marshmallow Set used increases that gave the raglan seam a slightly lacy look. Luckily Lilia includes a link to a youtube video on how to work the increases. Once I saw how the increases worked, suddenly the instructions made more sense! After you finish the body and sleeves, you pick up stitches to knit the buttonbands.

I had a whole lot of ends to weave in with this cardigan. Instead of carrying all the yarns down the sides, I cut them after each stripe. By doing that, I just gave myself more work. However, when knitting the lice stitch yellow stripes, you only use the blue yarn on the knit rows, not the purl ones. This means I had to cut the blue yarn after each row. I’m sure you could figure out NOT to do this, but I couldn’t!
