I knit the Trio of Hats Beanie for one of Kenji’s new friends!
The Trio of Hats is a series of three free patterns by Woolly Wormhead. The Beanie looks like a beanie, obviously. There is also the Pixie and the Square Top in the series. Each starts with varying widths of garter stitch and a little band of simple lace. Then the beanie crown decrease and ends in an I-cord top, while the Pixie has a pointed top, and the Square Top has an obviously square top. All hats include five sizes, from preemie to adult.
I decided to knit the Trio of Hats Beanie because it looked the simplest. However, I now want to knit the Pixie for another of Kenji’s friends!
I used just over 90 m of orange DK weight yarn to knit the child size. Babies grow so fast, so I wanted to make sure that the hat will fit A when it gets cold again in Toronto! I chose Rooster Almerino DK in the Starfish colourway from my stash. This is an alpaca-merino blend yarn that will make sure A is warm once winter hits. The yarn is soft and has a slight halo. The colour is a lovely subdued shade of orange that will surely bring a pop of colour in the middle of winter. Check out the Diamond Hat I knit using the same yarn in different colours.
Since my gauge is always loose, I used 2.5 mm needles instead of the 3.5 mm ones as recommended. Even though the hat is small, it took me three days to knit because I’ve been taking care of my own baby. Baby knits are always satisfying!
