I made a huge mistake with Turquoise Cablegram hat. Instead of the worsted weight yarn that the pattern called for, I used DK weight. In the past, this may not have been an issue because I used to have a very loose gauge. Sometime last year, my knitting changed quite suddenly. The first time it happened, was for the Turquoise Tête-Bêche Toddler’s Hat, which is was supposed to be adult-sized. Luckily, it worked as a toddler size and was gifted accordingly.
To offset my loose gauge, I often used a smaller sized needle or used a finer yarn. Meinhilde also uses this trick. In the past, this worked out really well, until it suddenly didn’t. I can’t get this hat on my head. For reference, I have a small/medium adult sized head at ~55cm / 22in. An adult friend with a very small head was able to wear it, I’d say that a 45cm/ 18in head size is appropriate.
The Turquoise Cabelgram is the second project I knit from PomPom Quarterly issue 24. This is the first issue I ever bought, which was at the annual Knitters Frolic. Meinhilde and I are now avid PPQ readers and eagerly wait for each issue’s release date.
The cabling pattern was enjoyable to knit and has a triple wrap stitch, which was new to me. The repeating cable looks like a chain travelling up the length of the hat.
The yarn is Leizu DK by Julie Asselin in colourway Alpin. It is a beautiful 90% superwash merino and 10% silk blend. It came from the closing sale of the Purple Purl last summer, and is a partial skein I found in the discount bin. The yarn has excellent stitch definition for the cables. I used a smaller needle size to knit this tight gauge in the turquoise cablegram– US 1½ – 2.5 mm.

That is an absolutely adorable hat. Beautiful color, too.
Thank you, both the pattern and yarn are winners!
