I’ve created a roundup of some beautiful free adult pant and legging knitting patterns. Knitting the Hosenmatz and Baby Brights Tights for Kenji inspired me to find adult pant and legging knitting patterns. They look so comfortable on him, so I want to knit myself a pair!
Of course, you can always browse the massive archive of free patterns on Ravelry to find more free pant and legging knitting patterns. Many of these patterns are by established designers, so they shouldn’t have errors and should be well written. However, I have not tested them, so always check for errata to prevent future headaches!
Trying out a designer’s free pattern is a good way to get to know how the designer writes, so if you like his or her instructions and methods, you might feel more comfortable purchasing another pattern of theirs. Also, it is really easy to buy patterns on Ravelry!
So here they are, in no particular order:
Sion by Christina Danaee
Sion are leggings or pajama pants knit in DK weight yarn. They call for 274 – 1097 m of yarn, depending on size and length. Christina says “Sion is named for an Irish word for “the elements”. The Sion Lounge Bottoms are available in two lengths: Bloomers or Long Johns. Knit in the round to the legs, then split into two sections knit separately in the round. The waistband is folded over and an I-cord waist tie is added last.” These are available in five sizes, from a hip measurement of 86 cm / 34″ to 117 cm / 46″.
Feelgood Trousers by Sari Nordlund
The Feelgood Trousers are a pair of loose-fitting jogging pants. They use 1610 – 2300 m of light fingering yarn. The pattern includes five adult sizes, from XS to XL, including finished waist circumferences of 68-92 cm (26.75″ to 36.25″) so they are not size inclusive. The pants are knit bottom-up in the round. The back is shaped with short rows. The pattern includes a schematic so I think one could try to size up a couple sizes if needed. The pattern is available in English, Swedish, and Finnish.
Rhoda by DROPS Design
Rhoda calls for 1855 – 2597 m of sport-weight yarn. The pattern includes five sizes. The pattern calls for a fingering weight sock yarn as well as a sport-weight alpaca. If you want the warmth of alpaca but the stretch of wool, this combo should be super!
The pattern has a ribbed waistband and a length of ribbing down the outside of each leg. This is different from many of the other pant and legging patterns here, which are often either 100% ribbed or 100% stockinette.
Winter Warmer by DROPS Design
Winter Warmer are a kind of long john. They call for 631 – 841 m of DK weight yarn. Include x sizes, from a hip measurement of 84 cm / 33″ to 124 cm / 48.75″. You knit these top-down in the round. They also include a short row gusset for better fit.
Joost Pants by Vladimir Teriokhin
The Joost Pants are a free pattern by Vladimir Teriokhin for Lion Brand Yarns. The pattern includes five sizes, from a 71 cm / 28″ to 112 cm / 44″ waist, and a 91.5 cm / 36″ to 132 cm / 52″ hip. The Joost Pants call for 1125 – 1800 m of worsted weight yarn, so they should knit up pretty quickly! The pants are worked in one piece in the round from the top downwards. This means you can easily customize the leg length!
So Cosy by DROPS Design
Speaking of cozy, So Cosy also includes size sizes and calls for 1434 – 2253 m. These are knit top down and in the round. The leggings include a short row gusset for better fit. From what I can see, the whole pattern is knit in ribbing. These look like the ‘female’ version of the Mountain Stroll leggings because they look very similar.
Aran Knit Pants by Pierrot
If you fancy cables, try the Aran Knit Pants! The pattern includes only two sizes, one for children and one for women. Depending on the amount of ease you like, the one small adult size might fit a larger body than what the pants were designed for. Since the Aran Knit Pants require 800 – 1240 m of sport-weight yarn, you might be able to knit with larger needles, heavier-weight yarn, and a looser gauge. Since I had trouble finding the pattern on the Pierrot website, you can access it below:
Mountain Stroll by DROPS Design
Mountain Stroll is a knit legging pattern for men, but I think it just means there are larger sizes included. The pattern calls for 1434 – 2223 m of fingering-weight yarn. The pattern includes size sizes, from a hip of 82 cm / 32.25″ up to 130 cm / 51.5″. Mountain Stroll is knit in ribbing in the round, top down. These will be super stretchy and cozy!
Casual Bootcut Pants by Phoenix Bess
Casual Bootcut Pants have a slight bootcut and low-riding waistband (they’re from 2008 lol). They include five sizes, but the sizing is quite limited. The pattern ranges from a hip of 78.75 cm / 31″ up to 104 cm / 41,” so they would not even fit me! These knit pants should knit up quickly as they call for worsted weight yarn. Unlike most of the above patterns, these recommend a small amount of positive ease.

I like the DROPS patterns with the rib on the outside of the leg. Seems like a good solution for those of us who’d need some extra stretch around the hips.
Thanks for sharing with us at Creatively Crafty #ccbg 🙂
I agree, I might do that one, or the one that’s totally rib!
Hello there! Thank you for suggesting the adult pants and leggings knitting patterns.
All of your pants and patterns are worth a try. I really liked the winter warmers-by-drop design. It looks so comfortable and stylish. Keep posting.

Thanks so much. Couldn’t get the link to work for Aran Knit Pants by Pierrot. Any suggestions on how to get it in English?
Hi Dorie,
It seems like the site took down their English patterns (as far as I can tell). I’ve fixed the link and added it here (via the Wayback Machine): https://web.archive.org/web/20201031000300/https://www.gosyo.co.jp/english/pattern/eHTML/ePDF/1601/215w-06_Aran_Knit_Pants.pdf
