The Green Oliver Hat is one of many designs we’ve made by EweKnit Toronto. Their first book is called North 40: Baby Sweaters and Accessories Vol. 1 and you can see our other projects from the book here.
Claudia Q, the owner of EweKnit, designed the Oliver Hat for the book. EweKnit is one of our favourite Toronto yarn stores, and thankfully it’s just a short walk from where we live. Claudia publishes a lot of patterns for both babies and adults. This pattern includes three sizes: 0-3 months, 6-18 months, and 2 years plus. I knit the 6-18 month size as Kenji was almost one year old in these photos. I used 3.5 mm and 3.75 mm circular needles for the brim and crown respectively. This hat is a great way to use up small amounts of yarn from your stash, since it requires just about 183 m of DK weight yarn.
I used just under one skein of Rooster Almerino DK in the Gooseberry colourway, with two rows each of Custard and Starfish (the yellow and orange, respectively). This yarn is 50% alpaca and 50% merino. That means it has a slight drape and is toasty warm, but it has a bit of memory from the wool. I’ve knit other projects using this yarn, including the Yellow Taylor Hat, also from the same book.
The Green Oliver Hat is so small that it knit up very quickly. It starts with a garter stitch brim that transitions to stockinette for the body. The coloured stripes are purled to give texture to the hat. The original design in the book has a light blue body with darker blue stripes. These muted colours work well but I love the pop of colours that the orange and yellow stripes provide. It looks like a little bit of summery flowers in the dreary Canadian winter.
Purl ridges in the main colour also decorate the crown of the hat. If you so chose, you could use scraps of gradient yarn to knit those as well, to give an allover gradient effect to the ridges. This is a great little scrapbusting project!
The Oliver Hat is the hat that matches the Oliver Sweater, so can also use any leftover yarn you might have left! Like the hat, the sweater has garter stitch cuffs, hem, and collar, and has a striped body. Two years ago, I knit the Oliver Sweater using a blue and white cotton-merino yarn. I was secretly pregnant at the time, and now Kenji is big enough to start wearing it!
