I’ve created a roundup of some beautiful free brioche knitting patterns. Of course, you can always browse the massive archive of free patterns on Ravelry to find more free brioche knitting patterns. Many of these patterns are by established designers, so they shouldn’t have errors and should be well written. However, I have not tested them, so always check for errata to prevent future headaches.
Trying out a designer’s free pattern is a good way to get to know how the designer writes, so if you like his or her instructions and methods, you might feel more comfortable purchasing another pattern of theirs. Also, it is really easy to buy patterns on Ravelry!
From left to right, top to bottom:
Peacock Shawl by Happy Knitter
This stunning shawl uses about 995 m of sport weight yarn. The shawl pattern includes written instructions, charts, and a video tutorial to knit one size. You knit the shawl completely in brioche rib stitch. The pattern is divided in three panels and each panel consists of a peacock feather motif that includes more and more feathers as the pattern advances.
Iberis by Rachel Søgaard
The Iberis pullover is a sweater with a simple, contemporary silhouette with an identical front and back. Like many patterns by Filocana, the pattern is available in English, Danish, and German. The pattern uses a simplified version called fisherman’s rib, which makes it possible to create vertical stripes in two colours. The sweater pattern includes five sizes, from a chest of 93 – 125 cm (36.5 – 49.25″). As the sweater is knit in 1000 – 1800 m of Aran weight yarn, it should come together pretty quickly!
Helix Brioche Hat by Jonatan Tollow
The Helix Brioche Hat is a two-colour-brioche hat made with basic brioche stiches. It is a fitted hat, however you can easily modify it if you rather want a taller hat by adding a pattern repeat. The designer has also included his own picture tutorial on the basic brioche stitches and terms. The pattern calls for 160 – 200 m of DK weight yarn and is available in both English and Swedish.
Brio Brioche Hat by Louise Robert
The Brio Brioche Hat is knit in the round from the bottom up. The pattern includes both written instructions and charts. You can opt for contrasting colors and you will get a soft hat with a colourful, almost embossed pattern. The pattern includes two sizes and calls for 238 – 274 m of DK weight yarn.
Cleary by Alison Green
Cleary by Alison Green is a cozy pullover knit from the top down in an usual construction with increases over the shoulder line. You work the yoke, cuff, and hem in two-colour brioche, and optional short rows raise the back neck for a more comfortable fit. The pattern includes ten sizes, from a bust of 33.75″ to 70″ and calls for 1052 – 1865 m of DK weight yarn. Cleary was published in Knitty, Deep Fall 2021. The contrasting brioche yoke and hem is a great way to use up the skein of colourful variegated yarn you may have in your stash.
Frozen Forest Shawl by Happy Knitter
The Frozen Forest Shawl is a brioche knitting pattern worked in brioche rib stitch. With every row you knit, you can see appearing more and more “trees”, so the “frozen forest” grows bigger and bigger. This pattern uses an I-cord bind off. In the video tutorial you can find instructions on how to knit the I-cord bind off or, if it seems to complicated, you can replace it with a more “usual” bind off for brioche knitting. The pattern includes written instructions, chart, and video tutorial and calls for 600 m of DK weight yarn, 300 m each of two colours.
Brioche Cable Cowl by Vanessa Ewing
The Brioche Cable Cowl uses the brioche technique to create a cowl that looks like it has regular cables running through it. The finished cowl is approximately 11” wide x 30” circumference and uses 391 m worsted weight yarn in two colours. The pattern includes written instructions to knit the cable in the round. The finished piece will be unbelievably cozy and squishy!
Fienna Hat by Olga Albrecht
Although it looks complicated, the Fienna Hat is a great introduction to two-colour brioche in the round! The pattern provides a link to a video tutorial (by DreaReneeKnits) that explains the method in a very approachable way. The hat pattern includes one size, but since brioche knitting is inherently stretchy, the finished hat will fit a head circumference of 50 – 58 cm / 19.5 – 23.” This slouchy hat calls for 205 m of fingering weight yarn in two colourways. Like most brioche knitting, the hat is also completely reversible! Worked in the round, the hat starts with 1×1 ribbing that goes over into simple two-colour brioche. You can embellish the garter stitch crown with an attachable pompom or leave it plain. This is also a great opportunity to play with colours – you can opt for high contrast yarns as shown or choose subtle, closely related shades.
Brioche Vest by Purl Soho
The Brioche Vest by Purl Soho is a vest that is worked flat from the bottom up and then seamed. The pattern includes five sizes, from a chest of 75 – 118 cm / 29.5 – 46.5″. It calls for 581 – 901 m of worsted weight yarn. Deep ridges and valleys give it a rich textural appeal, while wide, airy ribbing provides an unexpected loftiness. Plus, it begs for shaping details; even minimal decreases add a beautiful curve up and around an otherwise linear fabric. The pattern for Purl Soho includes written instructions and a photo tutorial.
