I’ve created a roundup of some beautiful free mohair garment knitting patterns. Of course, you can always browse the massive archive of free patterns on Ravelry to find more free mohair garment knitting patterns. Many of these patterns are by established designers, so they shouldn’t have errors and should be well written. However, I have not tested them, so always check for errata to prevent future headaches!
Trying out a designer’s free pattern is a good way to get to know how the designer writes, so if you like his or her instructions and methods, you might feel more comfortable purchasing another pattern of theirs. Also, it is really easy to buy patterns on Ravelry!
Mohair is really trendy these days, whether held single, double, or with another strand of a different yarn. All of these sweater, cardigan, and wrap patterns use a single strand of mohair-silk yarn in one of these methods. Thankfully, a lot of the laceweight mohair-silk yarns can be interchangeable. This is a good thing, as they can vary a lot in price!
From top to bottom, left to right:
Embrace by Thea Vesterby
Thea Vesterby designed Embrace for the Filcolana yarn company. This sweet wrap sweater uses a fingering alpaca yarn held double with a laceweight mohair-silk yarn. The pattern includes seven sizes, from a bust of 83 cm (32.5″) to 137 cm (54″). The delicate texture comes from slip stitches, and the sleeves are shaped with raglan increases and short rows. The pattern is available in six languages.
Syrinx by Stephanie Earp
Syrinx is an interesting pattern because it uses a single strand of laceweight mohair-silk yarn at the yoke. After the yoke increases, you add a second strand of yarn to finish knitting the sweater. This sweater uses a very loose gauge, which creates a sheer, floating fabric. So romantic! The pattern includes ten sizes, from a bust of 92.5 cm (36.5″) to 167.5 cm (66″), and is written in French and English.
Misty Harbor by DROPS design
I’ve had my eye on Misty Harbor for a while now. It has beautiful textures and lines, and is knit in just one strand of mohair-silk laceweight yarn! Despite the thin yarn, I believe this sweater will be luxuriously warm due to the mohair. This pattern includes six sizes, from a bust of 90 cm (35.5″) to 136 cm (53.5″). As with many DROPS designs, this pattern is written in 16 languages. Take note of the errata on this one before you start.
Esterel by Marie Amelie Designs
Esterel is a top-down boxy pullover with a round neckline and drop shoulders. With its brioche motif mimicking a cable, it is the perfect comfy and cozy winter sweater. Esterel uses one strand of mohair-silk laceweight yarn held double with a strand of laceweight wool-blend yarn. The pattern includes eight sizes, from a bust of 92 cm (36.25″) to 169 cm (66.5″), and is written in both French and English. Marie Amelie Designs has a few other free mohair garment knitting patterns available on her Ravelry page. Maybe I’ll have to finally learn brioche knitting to make this one!
Velvet Pullover by Claudia Quintanilla – EweKnit Toronto
If you’re new to knitting with mohair, this might be the garment for you. This simple pullover, made of mostly stockinette, uses one strand of mohair-silk laceweight yarn held double with a strand of fingering merino yarn. The pattern includes eight sizes, from a bust of 92 cm (36.25″) to 163 cm (64″).
Sea of Love by Katja Dyrberg // Popknit
Katja Dyrberg designed this cozy cardigan for the Filcolana yarn company. Sea of Love is a classic fine and feminine cardigan with a short fit. The beautiful rib pattern embraces you like a sea of love. This uses one strand of mohair-silk laceweight yarn held double with a strand of laceweight wool yarn. The pattern includes seven sizes, from a bust of 80 cm (31.5″) to 136 cm (53.5″). It is also available in five languages.
Esplanaden by Ditte Lerche
Ditte Lerche designed this cardigan for the Filcolana yarn company. The charmingly simple eyelet pattern on the yoke and the elegant fit of this cardigan makes this an instant classic. Esplanaden works just as well in your everyday wardrobe as it does if styled with a cute summer dress for a festive occasion. Esplanaden uses one strand of mohair-silk laceweight yarn held double with a strand of fingering sock yarn. The pattern includes five sizes, from a bust of 82 cm (32.25″) to 126 cm (49.5″). It is also available in three languages.
Calliope by Espace Tricot
Calliope is a raglan-style sweater knit in the round from the top down featuring expanding rib at the neckline, simple rib at the hem, and long, dramatic sleeve cuffs. The wide, circular neckline evokes a vintage sensibility and combines with the modern, boxy silhouette to create an updated classic that will easily fit into any wardrobe! Calliope uses one strand of mohair-silk laceweight yarn held double with one strand of merino fingering yarn. The pattern includes nine sizes, from a bust of 100 cm (39″) to 181 cm (71″), and is available in French and English.
Pearl Pointe by DROPS design
The Pearl Pointe wrap top has half-length sleeves and is worked top down with a lace border. It uses one strand of mohair-silk laceweight yarn held double with one strand of alpaca-silk sport weight yarn. The pattern includes six sizes from a bust of 80 cm (31.5″) to 130 cm (51″), and is available in sixteen languages.
